Who are The Cycle Paths?
We are an interdisciplinary group of Berkeley students, who worked on a semester long project for the course “Global Product Development” taught by Emily Au at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation.
About the course:
Global Product Development (GPD) was a selective course taught during the spring semester of 2018. Its rigorous curriculum focuses on the human-centered design process in order to create a prototype of a viable product.
What did we build?
We built a functional prototype of a bike lighting system, which allows users to indicate turning direction.
The Design Process:
Step 1: Identify an issue: urban commuters’ bike safety
Step 2: Interviews: we interviewed urban bikers in the Bay Area to identify user needs
Step 3: Brainstorm, brainstorm, and more brainstorm solutions: journey mapping, top-down brainstorming
Step 4: Create prototypes
Step 5: Prototype testing with users
Step 6: Evaluate the market: competitive benchmarking
Step 7: Patent search
Step 8: Create a Bill of Materials
Step 9: Focus on package design
